The Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project has been advocating with and connecting immigrant women in Minneapolis to needed services for over twelve years.
How we can help:
The Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project (IWAP) provides immigrant women with:
- Crisis intervention
- Referrals to housing and immediate shelter concerns
- Daycare options
- Employment support
- Food support
- Legal advocacy, including help with domestic abuse, police and court assistance
- General family issues
Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project staff, who speak Somali, Arabic, other East African languages and English, will build a close relationship with you and your family to work through issues of domestic violence and sexual assault. We will also assist any woman who needs help understanding and finding resources to adjust to life in Minnesota.
Where Services are Offered:
Services are provided at the Brian Coyle Center, the Domestic Abuse Service Center* in the Hennepin County Government Center, or wherever the client feels most comfortable in the community.
Services Offered:
Our services are available to any victim of domestic or sexual violence, free of charge.
- Legal Advocacy: Include assistance filing order for protection as well as support through the court process.
- Fellow-up Services: Rental and housing assistance, in-home advocacy and support services are provided to clients who have moved beyond their immediate crisis.
- Family Law Clinics: Groups led with family law an attorney who presents general information regarding family law matters as well as individual guidance from a family law attorney (interpreters available).
- Support Groups: Available for all women who have experienced domestic or sexual violence and women who live in the surrounding neighborhood who are isolated.
- Community Education, Professional Training and Financial Literacy Workshops: Presentation and trainings offered to professional or community organizations.
- Additional services include: One-on-one legal assistance, in which volunteer attorneys provide on-site advice and counsel to immigrant women at the Brian Coyle Center.
Free Legal Clinic
Every other Wednesday of every month from 12:30pm – 2:00pm
Lawyers from Dorsey & Whitney LLP offer clients the opportunity to consult with an attorney, free of charge. You may meet with this volunteer attorney for a limited consultation. The volunteer attorney can provide brief advice and information on most legal matters.

Consumer Debtor’s Rights; Bankruptcy; Landlord/Tenant; Employment
Personal Injury Referrals; Unemployment; Other Civil Issues
