Initiatives & Partnerships

Community Media Initiative

Pillsbury United Communities Community Media Initiative aims to lift up under-represented voices in the media through our two community media outlets: the longstanding community newspaper, NorthNews, and our new low-power FM radio station, 98.9 KRSM the Southside Media Project. We want to provide a platform to raise up the stories of the community, as well as enhance our already robust employment training programs by providing industry-specific training in journalism and radio production.

KRSM Radio
Operating out of Waite House in South Minneapolis, KRSM is a voice for the South Minneapolis community, broadcasting news, music, and community issues in multiple languages.

NorthNews
Operating out of Oak Park Center, is a full service, monthly community newspaper that serves as a vehicle to share community news and information on Minneapolis' North side.

Both media outlets will allow community members to share the stories, report on the news, and discuss issues that are most important to them, while also providing training, internships and job programs for people interested in communications, media, and journalism.

The Community Media Initiative is just one more way, we live out our vision to ensure that individuals and families are well and living in thriving communities. This initiative emphasizes teaching transferable work skills, foster pride in the community, encourage cross-cultural dialogue, share health and safety information in multiple languages, and create outlets for local residents to share their gifts with a large, diverse audiences.
