For Adults with Disabilities
Many adults with developmental disabilities live in isolation and are disconnected from services that support independent living. Low-wage jobs or misunderstandings in the community can lead to lives unnecessarily lived in poverty and disenfranchisement.
Yet people with disabilities should be fully included in their communities because they have much to offer and, as with all people, only desire chances to demonstrate their ability to make a difference.
Pillsbury United Communities actively promotes community involvement and employment for people with developmental disabilities primarily at the Camden Neighborhood Center through our EPIC (Employing Partners in Community) program.
EPIC offers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities both vocational and non-vocational services, with an emphasis on community integration, enrichment and employment in an attractive, safe and welcoming environment.
We also have several sites in the community where participants work in small groups with a job coach or work independently, with natural supports, as well as a day program at our Camden Neighborhood Center.
Supported Employment Services
We help people identify their skills, interests and support needs; develop their resume; complete job applications; and tour prospective jobs. We provide an environment for on-the-job training, both paid and unpaid, and follow-up support.
Adult Day Programming
In our adult day programming, EPIC participants learn about science, health and hygiene, numbers and money management, reading, and food and nutrition. The discussions/activities meet the needs and level of comprehension of the participants involved.
Life Skills
Finally, Life Skills at Camden Neighborhood Center provides critically important advocacy and navigation series that enable adults with some social barriers but living on their own to continue to live independently. Whatever their range of needs and capabilities may be, we design services to help our clients realize their personal potential, with advocates working in collaboration with adults to support life goals. This will include one-to-one advocacy, small group counseling, trainings and social/recreational opportunities.
