Resources will Help Build New In-House Customer Rewards Program that Offers SNAP Participants Digital Incentives, Making Healthy Options More Affordable
Minneapolis, MN – October 11, 2018 – Today, Pillsbury United Communities (PUC) announced the company has received nearly $100,000 in Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive (FINI) grant funding which will serve North Market, a grocery store and community wellness center, in North Minneapolis. The funding will be utilized to create a new, unique shopping experience for SNAP households by offering digital incentives to purchase additional fresh produce.
“Overwhelmingly, we heard from residents that expressed a deep desire to eat healthier and afford more fresh produce for their families,” said Adair Mosley, President and CEO of Pillsbury United Communities. “The FINI award allows us to equitably serve the residents of North Minneapolis through this innovative pilot and ensure we continue to prioritize the aspirations of the community.”
In close collaboration and partnership with Inmar, a leading technology and data analytics company, North Market is establishing an in-house customer rewards program that will be administered online and will interact seamlessly with the point-of-sale transaction system at checkout. Besides offering digital incentives for SNAP participants, the platform is designed to be user-friendly for North Market staff and provide rich data on customer purchases that will lead to better insights on the impact of incentives.

North Market and the surrounding community provides a unique setting and technological support for testing innovative strategies to increase the purchase of fruits and vegetables by SNAP participants. The pilot project offers an innovative model with three different types of incentives: 1) monthly digital coupons to all enrolled SNAP households, 2) paper vouchers for SNAP participants attending an on-site cooking class and/or 3) receiving a recommendation from an onsite healthcare provider to eat more fruits and vegetables.
Designated as a “food desert” by The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), North Minneapolis does not have the resources required to fully support the community. In response, PUC opened North Market in 2017, a 20,000 square foot facility with services including a grocery store, healthcare clinic, family nutritionist, community health workers and educational opportunities in cooking, nutrition, fitness and general wellness. North Market provides all that is necessary and more for the North Minneapolis community to thrive and grow.
