Waite House teens spend a week in Oaxaca, Mexico

The Waite House youth program took a delegation of ten teens and two staff to Oaxaca, Mexico from March 28-April 6. The trip was a hands-on educational experience with topics including the roots of migration, world trade policy, community farming, youth organizing, social change, art and environmental issues. The teens learned about the history and culture of Oaxaca through a visit to Monte Alban ruins, artisan workshops, lessons on Oaxaca cooking and more. Youth had the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with families in a smaller farm community called “Zaachila” through a three-day home stay. They also had the chance to meet with five local organizations working for social change. The Waite House teens called the trip “a crucial learning experience” and that “the relationships we made in Oaxaca will last a lifetime”. The teens are already beginning to make plans for their return in 2009!
