Volunteer Projects – September 29, 2009

*Volunteers can choose the hours and times that work best for them. They can volunteer for a 1-time activity or can choose to give of their time on a monthly, weekly or daily basis.  We are flexible based on the interests of each volunteer.

After-school Homework Help: 2:30 – 7:30 pm weekdays during the school year, volunteers assist elementary or high school students 1-on-1 with their homework to help them achieve school success. Some students are assisted in the computer lab.

After School Youth Activities: Once k-12 grade kids finish their homework, fun and creative activities are organized in a safe environment for their healthy engagement.  Activities are from 3:30 – 7:30 pm weekdays. Volunteers play games, paint and engage in other activities with kids. In the gym, volunteers play basketball or assist in monitoring gym activities to ensure youth are participating in a safe manor.

Special Events: Volunteers are always needed to assist in numerous ways for large community events in late afternoon or the evening.  Times vary.  Upcoming events include a community forum on Monday, October 26th, a Halloween Party on either Friday or Saturday October 30 or 31 (To be determined), and a multicultural dinner and celebration on Thursday November 19th.

Clean-Up Projects: Volunteers are crucial to the ongoing maintenance and beautification of the Coyle Center. Throughout the year there are opportunities for painting, cleaning walls, organizing the food shelf, and in the summer we add gardening to the list.  Cleaning and painting projects are great for groups that want meaningful takes to accomplish in a short, one-time experience. The projects are scheduled base on the interests of the group, any day or evening Monday-Sunday.  A time commitment of just 2 hours is requested.

Summer Kids Camp: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm weekdays June 15 – August 14, for ages 5-12.  Volunteers assist with program activities, work directly with children, and help with clean up.  Volunteers can assist for 1 ½ to 6 hours per day for as many days as they’d like.

Youth Job Shadowing: Youth in 9th-12th grades that are in our FANS program (school success and college readiness) could come to Medtronic for a tour provided by employees followed by individual descriptions of jobs with each employee meeting with 2-3 youth.  The date is flexible, as well as the amount of time committed by employees. Size of the youth group would be about 12 total.

Food Shelf:  Free Produce Distribution including culturally specific food distribution and staples food distribution from 10:30 am – 2:30 pm every Thursday of the month. Volunteers will help with set up, repackaging, guiding people to waiting room as they come, distribution of produce, and clean up. Volunteers can choose to assist for 1 ½ – 4 hours per day for as many days they’d like.

MAC and NAPS Food Distribution: 7:30 – 9:30 am the first Friday of each month.  Volunteers assist with unpacking, socializing and food distribution to primarily Vietnamese elders enrolled in the program.

Women’s Circle: 4:00 – 6:00 pm two Wednesdays a month. Volunteers can assist by giving a presentation on a topic of interest, participating with the group, and/or preparing and bringing food for the group (about 20 women).

Elders Healthy Tuesdays: 2:00 – 4:30 pm every other Tuesday beginning 6/2/09. Volunteers can assist by giving a presentation on a health related topic, or showing elders how to make a healthy meal, provide healthy snacks for the group, and/or participate/socialize with the elders group.

Elders Health and Wellness Field Trip: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm in May 2010. Volunteers assist staff and Somali and Oromo elders as they go on two field trips that include fun and healthy activities. Volunteers should be available for the entire field trip.

Elders Companion & Exercise Activities:  Volunteers assist staff and East African elderly clients (Oromo, Somali, and Ethiopian) in groups of 5-7 companions to places of their choice and engage them in social group and story telling or walk to grocery or coffee shop or park grounds to socialize at least once a week. Also, volunteers assist elders in walking, simple aerobics and other body movement activities twice a week for about 30 minutes to an hour each to help elders remain physically and mentally active.
